Children can either have a school dinner or bring a packed lunch. For administrative purposes, we ask that you make the choice for one or the other on a termly basis, complete the Change of meal request form (see pdf below or available at the school) and return to the school office.
From September 2021 the price of a School Dinner is £2.35 (£11.75 per week). Hallfield has its own kitchen and meals are freshly prepared daily. There is a choice of main dish, salad and dessert. Water and milk are available at mealtime and children are not allowed to bring their own drinks. The sample menu is included below.
Free school meals are only available to children whose parents are in receipt of eligible benefits.
Eligible benefits include –
Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400.
Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of no more than £16,190, as assessed by HMRC.
Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
If you think you are entitled to Free School Meals, you have two options:
1. Apply online from 1 September 2021: www.westminster.gov.uk/education/free-school-meals
This option reduce significantly the waiting time on your application.
If the application is successful, you will receive an email advising you of your eligibility, and the start date. You will also be asked to contact the school to make the necessary arrangements to order the meals.
Where an application cannot automatically be approved as additional information may be needed , you will receive an email advising and inviting you to upload your benefit information for checking. Once this has been checked and a decision made, this information will be sent to the school through the daily update.
2. Complete a Free School Meal Application form which can be collected from the office or downloaded from our website (section below).
Free School Meals will not be given unless we have authorisation from Westminster and it can take up to 15 working days to get approval. The sooner you apply, the quicker we can get authorisation.
We are a cashless school and have School Gateway for online payments (debit/credit card and bank transfer). This means that you will be able to make online payments via the School Gateway smartphone app or website. You will also be able to view school meal balances and top them up at any time.
Aside from saving the school time and money on administration, School Gateway will also make it easier for parents to pay any time 24-7 and reduce the amount of cash being carried by children on school premises.
What you need to do:
Activate your School Gateway account. It’s quick and easy to do. All you need are your email address and mobile number that school holds on record for you.
Download the app: If you have a smartphone, please download School Gateway from your app store (Android and iPhone). The app shows the same information as the website PLUS it saves the school money when we send you a text message.
Visit the website: www.schoolgateway.com and click on ‘New User’. You’ll receive a text message with a PIN number. Use this PIN to log into School Gateway.
If you’re having trouble logging in, it may be because the school doesn’t have your current email and mobile phone number on record. Please call the school and we’ll update the details on our system.
We hope that you will find School Gateway to be a fast and easy way to pay for school dinners (and other items like uniforms, breakfast club or trips).
All pupils in these year groups will receive a free school meal.
It is easy to create an appetising packed lunch every day for your child. You should try to give them nourishing foods that are good for them. Sweets, biscuits, crisps and fizzy drinks are not allowed as part of a packed lunch. Fast food is also not suitable for packed lunch. The only hot meals served are school meals from the school kitchen. Water is available at mealtime.
